A Year of Shinto

Hatsumōde 初詣

These photographs depict Hatsumōde 初詣, a ritual that takes place on the first day (and up to the third) of the new year. It represents the fresh start we can take, and is a time to set intentions but also offer gratitude. This event was on January 1, 2025 at the Shin Mei Spiritual Centre, home to Matsuri Foundation of Canada, on Knapp Island, B.C.

 

Tai Sai (Great Ceremony)

These photographs depict the annual Tai Sai (Great Ceremony) for Tsubaki Dai Jinja North America during which the shrine doors are opened. Hosting the ceremony was Rev. Ann Evans, a Shinto priest and the Guji, High Priest, of Shin Mei Spiritual Centre. Three senior priests came from Tsubaki Hongu (Japan) including, Guji Yukiyasu Yamamoto, who is the 97th generation to lead Tsubaki O Kami Yashiro (Mie), Negi Yukiko Yamamoto, and Negi Hitoshi Iwasaki. Music offerings were presented to the kamisama, including a performance with three shakuhachi by Alcvin Ramos. After prayers and offering were made, the shrine doors were closed again until next year.

Misogi 禊

These photographs depict Misogi (禊) a purification ritual, literally meaning "water cleansing," that involves ritual washing of the entire body. It's a practice aimed at cleansing both the physical and spiritual self, and it can be performed in various locations like waterfalls, rivers, or lakes. This event was on May 10, 2025 in the sea surrounding Knapp Island, B.C. and led by Rev. Ann Evans.
